Do We Need Probiotics Dietary Supplement? Isn’t Food Enough?

A balanced dieat that includes a variety of fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi etc. can provide a good source of probiotics. However, there are certain situations where taking probiotics supplement can be considered, such as antibiotic use, digestive disorders, immune support etc.

Antibiotic use cases, for example, it is understood that it can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and can cause antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). The current status of probiotics usage for AAD is summarized here : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9408191/, indicating that there are several researches showing the benefit of certain probiotics strains for the prevention of AAD. Yet, still call for large placebo-controlled trials to focus on detailed dosages, strain specific effectiveness etc.
